After writing a few weeks or months on a blog, one seeks to take the next step and wonders: What do I do with my blog? Do I change to a paid hosting? Do I hire advertising to increase visits? Doubts that will not be answered until we execute them, but really, what should be the first investment of a blogger or webmaster?
From my point of view there is only one answer that takes by far the others: A domain name. Why? Because:
- You can already say that you own a name that you can turn into a brand.
- It gives you more presence on the net. I don’t understand exactly why, but having a domain name makes the so-called “big blogs” take you more seriously.
- It is portable. You can switch between free services or paid hosting and your domain name can always be moved along with your blog.
- It acquires value. There is already a well formed market for selling domains with traffic that if, for some reason, you need to sell it you can do it with relative ease.
- They are cheap. It’s only $10 or less that will make you the owner of the domain for a year.
- If you have a good imagination or are lucky enough to find a good domain name it will be easier for your readers to remember and even have positive SEO consequences.
I don’t usually give recommendations, because I am also in a learning process, but having a domain name seems to me a basic and simple step that gives great advantages. If you have the opportunity, make a domain your first investment.
